Session 155 – Battle for the Swamp Fane part 3

Image
3/25/25 Day 42 – Late afternoon, early evening The stones I had collected vibrated in my hand as I felt the Animate Object spell take effect.  I looked at the skeleton trying to wipe out one of the runes.  I directed my thoughts to the enchanted stones and thought, Destroy that skeleton .  They all lifted from my hand and zipped through the air.   Lady Ireena jogged over and put her hand on my shoulder and cast some sort of healing spell on me.  At least I wasn’t at the threshold of death for the moment. I looked back at the skeleton as the stones smashed into it, pulverizing it in but a moment.  The rune remained undamaged. I heard the haunting tune of Laz’s pipes in the air, as several of the undead pulled back from him in fear. However, at the same time, three wights appeared from outside the circle and moved in.  One got a serious hit in on Ireena causing her to lose concentration on maintaining her ring of Spiritual Guardians. Kasimir w...

Session 154 – Battle for the Swamp Fane part 2

3/18/25 Day 42 – Late afternoon, early evening I’ve written before that fog is a constant companion here in Barovia.   Sometimes thicker, sometimes thinner.   In this case, the fog had thickened outside the fane to the point that we really couldn’t see more than 20 feet or so past the standing stones. However, a new fog started to materialize inside the protected circle.   Coming up from the ground below was a sickly, yellow gas.   It wasn’t thick enough to restrict vision, but it had a foul sulfurous smell making it difficult to breathe. Arabelle ran through this fog right up to where a ghoul was engaged with Wolfram.   She activated another rune, and there was a burst of blue light, maybe 40 feet in diameter.   Three of the undead were caught in the blast.   It destroyed one of them and injured two more but had no discernable effect on any of us. As I turned away from the flash, I saw a floating orb of light approaching Dacso. ...

Session 153 – Battle for the Swamp Fane part 1 3/11/25 Day 42 – Mid afternoon (Thanks to Abe for sending Arabelle’s visions and Jeff for the transcript!) Swamp Fane As Laz reported, Arabelle had recovered the shuttle from the center of the fane, and the rest of us were collecting those odd flowers as depicted on the stone carving. Arabelle and Lady Ireena were sitting in the middle of the circle in quiet conversation.   Dacso took it upon himself to approach the two.   As he got closer, Arabelle invited him to sit.   (The following is what Dacso later related to me) Arabelle told him she knows he didn’t learn much from speaking with “Mama Eva,” but she can tell him some Madam Eva would have related. “You have suffered loss, as have we all, and you moved quickly to leave that loss behind. You may find that, in this, your willingness to abandon that which no longer serves you has a cost, but there are some choices that cannot be undone. Still, have hope...

Session 152 - Laz's perspective

Thanks to Dave P for authoring while I was out! “There it is then. My boot has soaked through finally. Again. More stinking, filthy mess. The leather is little more than a sieve now.”   We had worked our way through the marshes and swamps, now only to come to these bleeding streams and rivers. The advice to “follow the river” sounded simple enough if one did not consider the crossing of said river in the first place. The crossing of the first stream had left several of us a bit battered, bruised, and exhausted. I don’t really know how the Paladin managed it weighed down with all that armour and kit. Still, not my problem so long as he survives. Coming to the second river I suggested we might be better served by putting up a guide rope to improve our balance while fording. Dacso and the Paladin offered to cover me while I worked across and things went uneventfully as the rest of the Party crossed. Then we realized we hadn’t set up the rope for retrieval. Fully resigned to ...

Session 151 – The hut and the hike

2/25/25 Day 42 –Afternoon Kasimir landed next to our little group, still holding onto Arrabelle.   He said he still had a few minutes left for his Fly spell, and if we didn’t mind, he’d fly directly to the Fane with her .   They’d find a place to conceal themselves until we arrived.   This way we wouldn’t have to worry about how we’d get Arrabelle through the rest of the swamp, not to mention fording a river. We agreed, and Arrabelle gave us general directions on how to get to the Fane. Once they took off, Wolfram took a moment to heal himself and some of the rest of the party. Oloch, who was still up in the hut, lowered a rope so Laz and I could climb up.   Well, we didn’t climb so much as Oloch pulled us up one by one. The first order of business was to free the ravens.   Ireena must have felt this as well, because she told us to try and open the cages…just as we started trying to open the cages. (You want to really irritate a man?   ...
