Session 167 – Now you see them…

6/17/25 Day 43 The staircase stretched down and away from us at a steep angle.   I was concerned at first that the stairs might be trapped and collapse into a slide of some sort, but it didn’t make sense for someone to disable the glyph but leave another trap intact right in front of it. At the bottom of the stairs was a door. Laz checked it, then opened it without difficulty.   The first thing we (well, I) noticed was a large brazier in the center of the room.   There was a tall, white flame burning that gave off no heat.   Above the brazier was a large hourglass.   When I say large, I mean approximately dwarf sized. While there was sand in the hourglass, it was all stuck at the top – as if it had been blocked off at the waist.   On either side of the room were two large statutes, perhaps two or two and a half dwarves high.   The statues were of armored men mounted on war horses. There was one door at the opposite end of the room, and t...

Session 166 – Unexpected assistance

6/10/25 Day 43 As there didn’t seem to be a way down from here, we headed back to the main tower where the Heart hung.   Based on what we’d seen so far, I figured that if we managed to destroy the heart, there was very good chance the stairs would stop moving.   However, I felt there was also a chance the entire tower would just collapse on us. We talked about the degree by which the stairs would buck and shift when we were on them, and decided that if we crawled, rather than walked down the stairs, we had a much better chance of getting to the bottom. We began our ignominious descent and reached a landing point about mid-way down.   (Laz, with his superior balance scouted ahead of us.) On this landing there were exits to the battlements on the east and northwest.   Laz took up a position to the east.   As I came down a figure caught my eye out of the northwest exit.   The Chamberlain was standing there, watching us.   “Laz,” I sai...

6/3/25 Day 43 My hand started to grow hot as I plucked a bit of bat guano from my component pouch.   I hoped Dacso and Oloch could figure out how to get out of there quickly…. No sooner had I thought that than Dacso and Laz came running out of the tower.   Laz attacked the vampire that was holding me and what remained of its body tumbled off the bridge.   Oloch came running out.   As soon as he was clear, I sent a fireball into the tower.   The resulting explosion destroyed about half of the animated halberds and damaged the rest. The remaining four halberds advanced on us.   One scratched Oloch but he responded by destroying it and one other.   I ducked under the attack of another one, when one of Dacso’s arrows whizzed by me and stuck into the handle of a halberd.   It lost its enchantment and clattered to the ground.   I grabbed the last one and disabled it with a shocking grasp. I turned, expecting some sort of acknow...

Session 164 - Tower battle part 1

5/27/25 Day 43 I found myself in much closer proximity to these vampires than I would have liked.   I used shocking grasp on one and tried to maneuver to a better position. Ireena moved, giving me some cover, while she and Oloch kept striking out at the undead. The vampire spawn themselves weren’t doing great in the light of Wolfram’s sunsword.   In fact, one burst into flames and evaporated like a burning sheet of paper.   The rest were simultaneously trying to shield their eyes while also attacking. All of them were smoking at this point. We continued fighting and another of the spawn evaporated into ash.   The last two gave up and ran outside to crawl underneath the bridge, hiding from the light.   Wolfram used this time to lay on hands to Oloch.   As we were catching our breath, we heard sounds of a fight above us.   We all looked up to where Laz and Dacso were dealing with at least two more vampires.   The warriors were getti...
